Research Topic: Organ segmentation of PET/CT scans by deep learning program to identify incidental findings. I am segmenting various organs (liver, aorta, T12-L5 vertebrae) in PET/CT scans to feed into a deep learning program that will (hopefully) segment these organs automatically. Then, we will determine criteria within these segmented organs to help determine incidental findings on these patients (such as fatty liver and osteoporosis).
Why MIMRTL?
I was fortunate enough to find Dr. McMillan’s research through the Shapiro Summer Research program at UW-SMPH, which lead me to MIMRTL. Currently, what I like most about the lab is the flexibility afforded to me! I am planning a wedding celebration for 6/27/21 with my wife (it is our 1-year anniversary, but we wanted a big party after our small ceremony during COVID), and the ability to work from home and travel back to Minnesota to visit vendors when needed has greatly reduced the stress of planning.
What hobbies do you enjoy outside of the lab?
I enjoy running, fishing, being outdoors, board games, video games, and being with friends and family.
What is a unique fact about yourself?
I can clap with one hand! I can do this with both hands – essentially doubling my clapping efficiency.

Research Topic: Synthetic CT generation from MRI inputs using GANs.
Why MIMRTL?
I love seeing the real-world applications that the group works on. I see their work making a big difference in the future of medical imaging. The group themselves is very welcoming and has been a huge help so far.
What hobbies do you enjoy outside of the lab?
In my free time, I like to spend it outdoors fishing, camping, and hiking. Otherwise, I like to relax and play video games or watch the Packers or Badgers.
What is a unique fact about yourself?
I just adopted a puppy!

Research Topic: This summer I am working to curate PET/CT datasets that will be used to train an AI to segment organs and detect common opportunistic incidental findings.
Why MIMRTL?
I am appreciative of how willing everyone is to help out whenever needed.
What hobbies do you enjoy outside of the lab?
I enjoy visiting state parks, working with technology, and watching Formula 1 racing.
What is a unique fact about yourself?
I was once on America’s Funniest Home Videos.
