MIMRTL Undergraduate Team Members Participate in the 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium

On April 25, 2024, Molecular Imaging Magnetic Resonance Technology Laboratory (MIMRTL) team members Tracy He, Ndinda Kasyoka, Aditi Sunil, and Kevin You presented their work at the Undergraduate Research Symposium held at Union South at the University of Wisconsin. This annual event showcases undergraduate creativity and research across a spectrum of disciplines, from the arts to the advanced sciences. Here’s a look at the projects presented by our team members:

Enhancing Lung Disease Detection in Chest X-Rays with Radiomics

Tracy He demonstrated the potential of radiomics for the detection of lung diseases in chest X-rays. Tracy explored multiple machine learning models such as decision trees, gradient boosting, and SVMs, and MLPs to demonstrate high performing classifiers for distinguishing lung disease.

Advancing Healthcare Communication with Medical Chatbots

Aditi Sunil and Ndinda Kasyoka introduced their project on integrating AI-driven chatbots in healthcare. Using Retrieval-Augmented Generation techniques, their chatbot reads and interprets medical literature to improve communication with patients about complex health conditions like kidney cancer. This project is exemplary of how AI can bridge the information gap in healthcare settings, offering patients and providers alike tools that enhance understanding and decision-making.

Exploring Multimodal AI Model Embeddings for Medical Image Search and Classification

Kevin You delved into the capabilities of multimodal AI models that process both images and textual data, providing enhanced contextual understanding. His work evaluated the effectiveness of embeddings from models such as CLIP and MedCLIP applied to medical imaging applications to enable applications such as image-based search functionality and zero-shot classification.

Congratulations to Aditi, Keven, Ndinda, and Tracy on presenting their research at the Undergraduate Symposium. Look for more great contributions from these rising stars!
